Bookmark and Share

Calicut is also known as Kozhikode. Calicut was once the capital of the powerful Zamorins. Calicut is on the Lakshadweep Sea. It has been known throughout the history as a significant port for trade and commerce. It was here at Kappad (16km) that Vasco Da Gamma first landed in 1498. Later, the Dutch, the French, and the British came to this shore to trade. Kozhikode still maintains its commercial traditions as cargo steamers visit the port even today. The town is famous for its boat-building yard, timber industry, and historic temples, and churches.

Calicut was the most important city of Northern city as being the capital of Malabar under Samuthiri rule. Apart from the rich heritage and historical monuments, Calicut has a bracing landscape with green clad hills, dense forests, gently flowing rivers, and exotic wildlife. Famous rivers such as Mahe river, Kallai river, and Chaliyar river are flowing through Calicut.
